President’s Message

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Please join us for the January dinner meeting, and get your year off to a great start.

I hope all of you had an opportunity to relax and enjoy the holiday season with family and friends, and were able to share the true meaning of whatever holiday you were celebrating. I also want to extend the board's "Best Wishes for the New Year"! We all get a fresh start at the beginning of the year, and I hope we all can take advantage of whatever opportunities come our way, both personally and professionally.

The ARMA year is already half over, and it is not too early to start thinking of the role you will take within your chapter next year. We need some new faces to step forward to take on a leadership role, and discover the real benefits your active chapter involvement will bring. What you gain will always far outweigh the effort. Please let any board member know of your interest.

And remember the Joint Spring Seminar scheduled for Friday, April 22nd. The committee has done a lot of work in setting this up, and it is not too early to mark your calendar, and plan to attend. The event will take place in Seattle, so it will be easy to take advantage of the educational opportunities offered. Spread the word, and help make this one of the best attended seminars we have had.

Best regards,

Tom Kirschner

Disaster Preparedness

Program:

This month our speaker will discuss the timely subject of Disaster Preparedness. This subject is certainly in the news recently with the tragic effects of the earthquake and Tsunami damage in South Asia. Although we may not experience this type of disaster in the Northwest there are other threats to the essential records kept by agencies and businesses; fire, flood, pests- disasters both natural and man-made. What to do to prepare for the unexpected and unplanned disaster? How can we protect our essential records that are, indeed, the most important assets owned by any organization? Michael S. Saunders, Puget Sound Regional Archivist, will provide us with the most up-to-date information on how we can preserve our records to protect against loss from disaster. Planning now for the unexpected may be the best type of insurance!

Speaker:

Mr. Saunders has been the Puget Sound Regional Archivist since 1989.  The Puget Sound Regional Archives is the unit of the Secretary of State’s Archives and Records Management Division that is responsible for public records management services, as well as preservation and public research use of archival collections from agencies of local government in King, Kitsap and Pierce Counties.

Mr. Saunders has more than twenty-five years of experience in public archives and records management in Washington State.  He has BA in history from Washington State University and a Graduate Certificate in Records Management and Archival Administration from Western Washington University.

Greetings from GNW Region Manager

Happy New Year!  I hope each of you had a wonderful Holiday Season.  As much as I love the Holidays, I am always quite ready to get back to “normal”!  I get a bit overwhelmed before Christmas and usually feel a sense of relief after I pack the ornaments and decorations away.  I hope you have found your “normal,” by now, too.

Do you usually make New Year resolutions?  I typically don’t (really!), but I am going to ask you to join me in one this year.  I resolve that I will take one little extra step for ARMA this year.  Might you do the same?  Will you attend one or two more meetings at your chapter than you did last year?  Can you volunteer for one more ARMA activity during 2005?  Will you write one article for your chapter newsletter between now and June?  Can you put your chapter’s seminar on your calendar today and request assistance from your organization now for the registration fee?  Will you do one more action than you did in 2004 for your chapter, for ARMA International, or for your profession?

Did you recruit a new ARMA member last year?  If not, here is your chance to do one more thing for ARMA in 2005! Did you forget to vote in association elections last January?  Well, you have a chance to remedy that this month!  (ARMA elections are being held this month through February 16th.  If your member info is current, please expect an e-ballot by January 6th.  Otherwise, a paper ballot should be mailed to you after that.)  Here is your chance to take that one extra little step for ARMA – VOTE!

I wish you and yours a happy and prosperous 2005 and I hope you will join me in the New Year’s resolution for ARMA.

Very truly yours,

Get Ready to Vote: Ballots mail January 6th

RIM Graduate Education at Western Washington University

by

Randall C. Jimerson

Director, Graduate Program in Archives & Records Management

Graduate programs in records and information management have expanded and matured in the past decade. As the profession seeks a wider role in the field of information science, the need to prepare students for careers in a rapidly changing world requires multidisciplinary education, greater emphasis on professional knowledge, and a diverse range of educational options. The graduate program in Archives and Records Management at Western Washington University, established in 1972 by the Department of History, offers a M.A. in History with a Certificate in Archives and Records Management. Students who already have a master’s degree can take the one-year Certificate program.

There are six key features of the WWU program in Archives and Records Management that, in combination, provide a learning experience distinctive from other graduate studies programs in RIM.

1) History-based program: The WWU program’s base in the Department of History provides

·                     An understanding of the historical context in which records were created;

·                     Knowledge of record-keeping practices and historical events that help improve our scheduling and appraisal decisions; and

·                     An emphasis on the historical development of the profession and of its basic principles.

2) Archives and Records Management: The second valuable element in the structure of the Western Washington program is its emphasis on integrating archives and records management as a single expanded discipline, rather than as two separate and competing disciplines.

3) Information Technology: No archivist or records manager can escape the need to master information technology. Although based in a humanistic discipline, the WWU program requires immersion in current methods and issues of information technology and electronic records. Since technological issues are changing quickly, our purpose is to prepare students to understand the theoretical and practical issues relating to electronic records, and to see electronic records as one part of a broader universe of documentation and evidence.

4) Management Principles: Because of the small staff size of many archives and records management programs, most graduates sooner or later will have managerial responsibilities. Therefore, our program includes a significant introduction to basic principles of business management in required courses.

5) Practical Experience: RIM education should prepare students for “the real world.” That is why WWU’s graduate program requires a 550-hour internship, which gives students the opportunity to work under supervision of an experienced professional.

6) Master’s Thesis: WWU requires students to complete an original master’s thesis on a topic they choose. Many graduate students have presented research papers at regional and national conferences and others have published their master’s theses or articles based on original research.

Conclusion

This curriculum at Western Washington University, based in a department of history, reflects but one of many possible approaches to RIM education. At WWU graduate archival education embraces the new technological imperatives of the computer age while retaining a strong component of traditional approaches still employed by many practicing professionals.
