President’s Message

Hard to believe that March is almost here. Happy (early) Spring to all!!!

The next four months are packed with lots of good stuff, and not just our regular dinner meetings. Our March meeting is the annual BEC ARMA/NW AIIM Joint Chapter Meeting, and we hope to see all of you attend. This provides us the opportunity to meet with other professionals, as well as to learn more about the local AIIM chapter.

April 22, 2005 is the date of our Joint Spring Conference, co-sponsored by our Bellevue/Eastside, Puget Sound, and Greater Seattle Chapters of ARMA International, and AIIM Northwest. "Records and Information Management-Life Cycle for Success", is an all day seminar, held at the Radisson Hotel SeaTac Airport, with a Basics and an Advanced Track. And registrants may switch between the two, as desired. We have an excellent line up of speakers, and Joan Feldman will be our lunch time (entertainment) speaker. This is one seminar you can't afford to miss. Plan now on attending.

In June, our chapter is hosting the Great Northwest Leadership Conference, that will be held right here in Bellevue. Members from all our chapters will be there, as well as several of the ARMA headquarters staff. This offers an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about ARMA and what you can do to help make your chapter stronger.

And speaking of interest in your chapter, we still need a few more members to step forward and offer their support to next year's board. If you have any interest at all in learning more about what this would involve, please talk to me or any one of the board members.

I hope to see you all at our March meeting.

Best regards,

Tom Kirschner

Morning Session (Presenter: Joan Feldman):

Weightless, invisible, and difficult to wrangle, rogue electronic document collections exist in all business. You know that computer-based documents reside on file servers and hard drives. You’ve learned that delete doesn’t mean deleted, and that electronic mail and other files can come back to haunt you.

This educational session presents basic technical facts and managerial solutions required for corporate governance, legal counsel, and the court. Together, we will cover the other discover “icebergs” on the horizon – including the emergence of unified messaging, and a growing interest in the discovery of complex databases.

Learn how records managers can (and must) get into the loop with the IT department and how relatively simple management policies provide good ROI. Real life stories and practical advice will highlight the financial and legal impact of sound electronic records management.

Afternoon Session:

Case Study: ARMA Conference Participants vs. Joan Feldman and Jeff Schowen

ARMA Conference participants will be divided into three (3) teams and each will be given an electronic discovery scenario from Joan and Jeff. Each team will be given 25 minutes to form a response using the lessons of the day.

This will prove to be motivating and likely provoke a spirited discussion ending the conference on a fun note. Each team will present their findings and the conference will close with some general critiques and review by Joan and Jeff.

Joan Feldman will also be speaking to members of the Alaska Bar Association on Tuesday, April 5, 2005, in the Hotel Captain Cook Fore Deck. Electronic Records and Document Management 101 – It Isn’t Just Scanning!

Bernard Chester

In today's computerized world, managing corporate information is not as simple as it once was.  We are asked to manage physical and electronic records, in systems and places we control and those we do not.  All too often, spot approaches are used to solve what is really an enterprise problem.

This presentation will provide a comprehensive framework for electronic record keeping within into the organization, and discusses all of the technologies and many of the challenges that present themselves.  Bring your questions!

Bernard Chester has been assisting public and private organizations to successfully apply digital document technologies for the past 16 years. His articles are published regularly in AIIM e-Doc and DB2 Magazine, and he has been technical editor for a number of industry standards projects.  Mr. Chester holds the CDIA+ and ICP certifications, and is a Principal with IMERGE Consulting.

We hope to see you on March 8th!
