President’s Message

Don't you just love April? Spring is here, tax time is upon us, and the Joint Spring Seminar takes place on Friday, April 22, 2005. The seminar will take the place of our regular monthly dinner meeting, and I hope that you will have the opportunity to attend. The planning committee has worked hard to bring you excellent speakers and topics for both the basic and advanced tracks, and the luncheon guest speaker should not be missed. We also want to thank the vendors that have signed up as exhibitors, and encourage you to visit their booths. Please consider attending to show your chapter support.

Our Great Northwest Region Leadership Conference, hosted by our chapter, takes place in June. It will be held in Bellevue, and we will have attendees from all our chapters, as well as some ARMA Headquarters staff. This is a great opportunity to meet members from around our region, and to get a good sense of how other chapters function. This is a day and a half event (all day Friday and 1/2 day Saturday), with great ideas and conversations from start to finish. Certainly worth consideration.

We still have a few positions to fill for next year's board, and if you are interested in finding out more about what is involved, please contact any board member. It's the best hour a month you could ever spend on your profession.

Congratulations to our own Bonnie Nadler, CRM. She was recently elected as one of our Association Directors, and her term will run from 2005 -2008. Thanks Bonnie, for making the commitment to your profession and your association.

Best regards,

Tom Kirschner

What a Disaster!

Workshop and Program:  We use the words lightly, but think for a moment and ask yourself if you’re ready when a disaster strikes.  Do you know what to save; what to leave behind?  Can you get your business started up again immediately and smoothly with all the documentation you need?  Are you prepared to work with no power?  Can you salvage damaged documents?  What if you have to relocate?

These are just a few of the questions that arise when we think about Disaster Preparedness  (workshop) and Disaster Recovery (program).  Of course, there’s an entire industry built around this topic, but what about the records?  They often get only cursory attention, but are the foundation for rebuilding after – and during – a disaster.  Come hear Leslie Malek speak about vital records programs, prioritization of salvage efforts, basic techniques for salvage and recovery, and more.

Speaker:  LESLIE MALEK is a native of Seattle. She obtained a Bachelor of Music at Pacific Lutheran University and has a Master of Music from the University of Washington.  She has had 27 years experience with Government records.

Ms. Malek is a Senior Records Analyst, for the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) 2003-Present. She provides assistance, advice, and guidance to Federal agencies on their agency records programs. She teaches a variety of courses to educate Federal employees on management of records/records systems. She participates on national NARA teams to improve records management practices throughout Federal government. Previous to her employment with NARA, Ms. Malek was the Records Officer, Seattle District US Army Corps of Engineers 1986-2001. She has received numerous Government awards and medals throughout her career. She is a long-time member of ARMA. Her personal interests include:  Time with husband and family; singing/music, literature, and fine arts; hiking and camping; history; spiritual communities; entertaining.

Wow! April 2005 is chock-full of RIM seminars around the GNW Region, have you noticed?  Hopefully you will have (or have had) the opportunity to attend one or more of these events to hear invaluable insight from experts in the field.  I plan to soak in as much info as I can this month, and definitely hope to see you at the Spring Conference in Seattle and at the Leadership Conference in May!

We look forward this year to your submissions, whether they are articles, news or insightful RIM info, to The Eastsider.  Email your submission to ramsdell5@comcast.net no later than the 15th of the month for inclusion into the following month’s publication, or bring a CD-R with your submission to the monthly meeting.

Jerry Rugh, Chapter Webmaster, has added a “Puget Sound Blog” button to the Career Center on the BEC Website.  This means that we now have a central repository for BEC, Greater Seattle and Puget Sound Chapters to post RIM vacancies.  If you have a job to post, please send it to Jerry and he will post it.  Thanks!

A Message from the Region Manager

Please join me in welcoming Kevin Hofeld as the new Region Treasurer!  Kevin is an employee of JR Simplot Company in Boise, Idaho. He has been a member of the Corporate Records Department at Simplot and a member of the Boise Valley Chapter since March of 2001.  He is in his second year as the Boise Valley Chapter of ARMA Treasurer.

Kevin brings to the Region Team valuable expertise as he has an academic background in business management and is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in human resources.  He has academic experience in financial accounting, managerial accounting and financial analysis.

I had the pleasure of meeting and visiting with Kevin at the 2004 Region Leadership Conference.  He is a delightful young man and will be an asset to the Region.

Speaking of leadership conferences, the 2005 GNW Region Leadership Conference will be hosted by the Bellevue/Eastside Chapter of ARMA on June 10-11, 2005 in Bellevue, WA.  This one and one-half day affair will be chock full of information for chapter leaders and those who may wish to learn more about ARMA International.  The registration fee will be $110.00 and is inclusive of all meals the first day and continental breakfast the second day.  The very capable Bellevue/Eastside Conference Committee has arranged for some very affordable room rates at the Coast Hotel where the event will be held.  If you plan to be a member of your chapter’s board of directors, please plan to attend!  Registration and conference information will be mailed to you soon.

I hope you received notice that one of our Region’s own, Bonnie Nadler of the Bellevue/Eastside Chapter, was elected as an Association Director for the 2005-2008 term.  Please join me in congratulating Bonnie.  I know she will work very hard for our Association!

As April approaches, please consider celebrating Records and Information Month at your workplace.  This year, ARMA considers April to be the “kick-off” month of a year-long campaign called “What’s Your RIM IQ?”  It is a theme that you may have some fun with at your agency or company!  There is information about the RIM-awareness campaign located at ARMA’s website (arma.org) as well as items for purchase.

Dean Koga, Region Coordinator, and I will be traveling to several chapters in the next couple months.  We look forward to visiting your chapters – and meeting you!  Until then…

Very truly yours,

Susan M. Lord, Manager

* Are your records fire-proof? *

Disaster mitigation and response is the key to getting your business up and going again after a disaster.  This program will present two case studies in disaster response and helpful (and easily implemented) tips to mitigating the effects of a disaster.   Come learn from actual experiences and get new ideas for disaster preparedness and response.

On July 12, 1973, a disastrous fire at National Personnel Records Center destroyed approximately 16-18 million Official Military Personnel Files.  Steve Edwards was employed at the facility during that time and will give a first hand account of the recovery efforts undertaken to recover the documents.  This large-scale effort offered many challenges and shows that time-honored techniques used in the field in 1973 are still important even with the modern technology available today.

May 21, 2001, an arson fire destroyed the offices of the Center for Urban Horticulture on the UW Campus.  Barbara Benson will describe the physical damage of the fire and outline the Center’s recovery steps.  Their efforts also included recovery of plant specimens and other irreplaceable research information.  She will also discuss the emotional impact on staff when dealing with a criminal act.

Preparation is the key to surviving a disaster and Jennifer Winkler with the City of Seattle will present what some offices at the City of Seattle are doing to ensure that their records are available after a disaster.  These simple techniques are easy to apply and can help deflect the effects of a disaster.

Following the presentation there will be an open forum to allow questions from the audience regarding disaster recovery or mitigation.
