President’s Message

As our summer comes to a close, and fall is in the air, I hope this finds you all well, and eager to help make this another great year for our chapter.

Both opportunities and responsibilities come with your membership in ARMA, and one is the opportunity to serve your local chapter as a board member.

As many of you know, Susan Hamman is fighting her battle with cancer, and the board has accepted her resignation as this chapter's Vice-President. We need to fill that position with a seasoned member, and we are looking for members to step forward and offer their help. For anyone interested in considering a position on the board, please just let me know.

And remember those Pink & White M & M candies: For each 8 oz. bag purchased over the next 2 to 3 months, 50 cents will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, up to $650,000!!!!!

October brings the annual ARMA International Conference, being held in Long Beach, California. This is an excellent opportunity for all those fortunate enough to attend, to get the true flavor of an international event. Lots of educational sessions, networking time with members from around the country, and an opportunity to discuss and view all the Records & Information Management concepts presented by all the vendors in the vendor exhibition hall. And hopefully, there will be a little time for some good old fun!   (Cont.)

Message from the Great Northwest Region Coordinator

A TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW

By Dean Koga

Greetings!  Many chapters have already held their first ARMA meeting for the new ARMA year.  After a year of outstanding chapter meetings, the Great Northwest Region Conference in Anchorage, and our Region Leadership Conference in Boise, last year will be a tough act to follow.  However, I have no doubt that this year will also be another banner year for all of our chapters.

Our Region Manager, Sue Lord, has brought new leadership and organization to our region.  Sue, along with Region Coordinators Leslie Sturgeon and myself, hope to support you, your chapter, and our region in anyway possible to promote your career as a RIM professional and to promote the ARMA spirit through educational and networking opportunities.

Several examples of upcoming educational opportunities include the Puget Sound Chapter and the Tacoma-Pierce County Bar Association (CLE) Continuing Legal Education committee’s seminar on September 17, 2004, to address “Recent Developments in Electronic Records Management” and ARMA International’s Conference in Long Beach, California, October 3-6, 2004.   There is also a joint ARMA chapter seminar to be held on April 22, 2005, in the Puget Sound area.  The seminar is sponsored by the Bellevue/Eastside, Puget Sound and Greater Seattle Chapters and will include topics such as electronic records, e-mail, and other RIM issues.  (Cont.)

The Editor’s Cube:

Jerry Rugh, Chapter Webmaster, has added a “Puget Sound Blog” button to the Career Center on the BEC Website.  This means that we now have a central repository for BEC, Greater Seattle and Puget Sound Chapters to post RIM vacancies.  If you have a job to post, please send it to Jerry and he will post it.  Thanks!

As always, we look forward to you submitting articles, news and other RIM info to The Eastsider.  Email your submission to ramsdell5@comcast.net no later than the 15th of the month for inclusion into the following month’s publication, or bring a CD-R with your submission to the monthly meeting.   Thanks!

October 12, 2004 Chapter Meeting

Records Management:  It’s a Zoo Out There!

Join us for a new perspective on an old theme.  You may think you have trudged through some jungles in your tenure as a records manager, but have you ever had to deal with an actual zoo?  Jennifer Winkler, City Records Manager for the City of Seattle, will take us on a safari through an interesting and challenging records management project for the Woodland Park Zoo.   Our tour will include stops at interesting exhibits including:

Ø       When Public Records go Private

Ø       ZooDoo: The Good, the Bad and the Eeww!, and

Ø       Storing your Records in a Tropical Rain Forest.

Although this will be a lighthearted look at records management, it will also show us some out-of-the-box thinking in applying retention periods, researching regulations and dealing with ownership and custody of records.

Jennifer Winkler was hired in September 2001 as the City Records Manager and is responsible for the development and implementation of the City Records Management Program.   Prior to her current position with the City, Jennifer was employed as a Records Analyst at University of Washington Records Management Services and was also employed as an Archives and Records Management Specialist for King County Archives and Records Management.  She holds a BA in History and Masters in History with a Certificate in Archives and Records Management, both from Western Washington University.

Jennifer is actively involved in several professional records management organizations, both locally and nationally, including the Bellevue Eastside ARMA Chapter, Association of Local Agency Records Managers (ALARM), National Association of Government Archivists and Records Administrators (NAGARA), Seattle Area Archivists and Northwest Archivists.  She has spoken both locally and nationally on local government records management issues, including researching retentions via the web, writing retention schedules for electronic records, and the importance of local government associations on their relations with governing entities.

We are also planning several regional events this year. One is the Joint Spring Conference planned for April, 2005, co-sponsored by our chapter, the Greater Seattle and Puget Sound chapters, and the local Northwest AIIM chapter. It is not too early to plan for this event, which will be an all day function, Friday, April 22nd, 2005. Another is the annual Leadership Conference, which our chapter is sponsoring. Both events offer the opportunity to participate in, and to benefit from your chapter's activities. We can use your help in the planning of these events, as well as your attendance, to help make them successful.

Best regards,

Tom Kirschner

Program:  Imaging 102- Advanced Imaging: Compliance with New Regulations Through Technology

Businesses today are deluged with regulations…HIPAA, DoD 5015.2, Sarbanes-Oxley, SEC, IRS…and the list goes on.  How do organizations handle information to ensure that they are compliant? Our October speaker, Steve Cohn will address some of these issues.

Speaker:  Steve Cohn currently serves as the Business Development Director for Optical Laser, a distributor of content management, data storage and compliance technology solutions. He has worked for Optical Laser for 8 years. Steve has had several roles within Optical Laser including Southeast Account Manager, Director of Storage Technology and Director of Sales before his current role. Prior to OL, Steve was the Area Manager for Enterprise Rent A Car in Orange County. Steve Cohn currently resides in Huntington Beach, California. While business, school, and sports are important aspects in his life, family and helping others is the foundation for his contentment and satisfaction.
