President’s Message

The Thanksgiving Holiday has come and gone, and I hope that each of you were able to enjoy family, friends and feast, with a little time to simply relax and enjoy the moment. The Holiday Season is in full swing, and another year is coming to a close. May Peace and Happiness carry you through December, and into the New Year. And don't forget those that are less fortunate. With that in mind, don't forget to bring items to our December meeting in support of our "Warm Woolies" project, like socks, gloves/mittens, sweaters, coats, etc.

And by the time you read this, my Rotary Club's annual "Rotary Embraces Kids" project will be in the books. This year we are sponsoring 59 children, and I want to personally thank our chapter and Susan Hamman, each contributing $125, which sponsors one child. I also want to thank the individual chapter members that volunteered to help the day of the event: Fran Blaylock, Carol Cameron, Sue Gunderson, Renee Murry and Joe Ramsdell. It's an early start to a Saturday, and well worth every minute! Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Our Joint Meeting with the Greater Seattle Chapter in November was another very successful evening. It is always nice to have a full house in attendance, and it was great to see so many new faces, many of whom were first time attendees! Darlene Curtice, CRM, gave an excellent presentation, titled "Electronic Records Imperative: RIM to the Rescue". And what a pleasure it is when the presenter is one of our own. It just highlights how much local talent we have right here in our own region. Thanks again Darlene.

The planning committee met again in November to further address the upcoming Joint Spring Seminar, planned for Friday, April 22, 2005. Speakers have been lined up, and topics and location are being finalized. Please keep that date open, and plan to attend what should be an excellent one day seminar. The best ARMA education there is!

Happy Holidays!!!

Best regards,

Tom Kirschner

The Editor’s Cube

As we count down the days to Christmas (and just where did the time go this year?), a lot of us are busy with traditional year-end RIM tasks: records destruction, assisting end users that just now are packing up records for off-site storage (“what is a retention period, anyway?”), and scrambling to put together a RIM budget that will make it past the CEO’s administrative assistant’s desk.  On top of that, we’re braving the hordes to find that perfect gift for our loved ones and friends, put up the tree and lights, prepare for New Year’s Eve parties, and…whew!   I’m exhausted already!

The point here is to make sure to take some time off during this busy rush to relax, think of the things we’re thankful for, and enjoy the holidays!  After all, we have another busy year ahead of us, sure to be chock-full of regulatory compliance issues, e-records challenges and alliances to forge with IT and Legal (to name a few).  So, Happy Holidays!!!

And, as always, we look forward to you submitting articles, news and other RIM info to The Eastsider.  Email your submission to ramsdell5@comcast.net no later than the 15th of the month for inclusion into the following month’s publication, or bring a CD-R with your submission to the monthly meeting.

Jerry Rugh, Chapter Webmaster, has added a “Puget Sound Blog” button to the Career Center on the BEC Website.  This means that we now have a central repository for BEC, Greater Seattle and Puget Sound Chapters to post RIM vacancies.  If you have a job to post, please send it to Jerry and he will post it.  Thanks!

Records Management: Cost and Risk in the Corporate World

Tina Torres, PMP

What is the cost of managing your records and the risk if you don’t? You have heard about Sarbanes-Oxley, you have heard that shredding is “bad,” but how do you know whether YOUR company needs to care? Tina Torres, PMP, will show us how to determine the equation that can help you answer these questions for your specific business case.

Ms. Torres’ presentation will address these key areas of RIM cost and risk:

Ø       How to determine the business need for records management in your company

Ø       The factors to consider when evaluating the risk of changing your records management program

Ø       Learn how records management can benefit your company

Ø       What are the pitfalls to avoid  - what works and what doesn’t

Christina Torres has 10+ years of professional business experience and expertise in Document and Records Management, Technology Integration, Policy Implementation and Project Management.   Since August 2003 she served in the role of Corporate Records Manager at Microsoft.  She manages the Corporate Records Management team, including the records center, the program administration, and policy guideline implementation.  Her mission is to take records management to the next generation.

Prior to her position at Microsoft, she was employed at USAA as Director of Records & Information Management in San Antonio, TX, where lead the efforts for RIM process improvements. She managed the Records & Information Management Compliance and Corporate Policy groups.  At USAA, Tina implemented a completely new records management program designed to manage records regardless of medium based on defined and measurable processes.

Other experience includes technology and project management positions in a number of industries, including high tech, architecture, education, financial services, and real estate.

We hope to see you on the 14th for this timely and informative program!

 Great Northwest Region Message

~Seasons Greetings!~

By Dean Koga

It’s hard to believe that the holiday season is already upon us.  It’s an exciting time to be with our friends and family, and to be thankful for everything we have.  It’s a time to share with others less fortunate than ourselves and to seek out those special gifts to give to the people we love.  Wherever you spend the holidays, may they be happy and safe.

As we start out the New Year, I hope you will give some thought to support ARMA by some means, such as, volunteering, attending meetings, supporting the Educational Foundation, speaking at a meeting, or referring a new member.

Our chapter meetings are well on their way for another year, as well as the plans for our Region Conference in 2006.  The conference will be held in Seattle and co-chaired by Susan Priebe and Jenny Winkler.  I’m sure they would like to hear from you if you have any suggestions, would like to be a speaker or be a vendor for the conference.

Remember, December 20 is the deadline for sending speaker’s proposals for the ARMA International Conference to be held in Chicago, September 18-20, 2005.

If you have not heard, Leslie Sturgeon has accepted a new position in her hometown of Long Beach and resigned her position as Region Coordinator on November 9.  We wish Leslie the best of luck in her new position and thank her for the work she did for the Great Northwest Region.  Sue Lord, our Region Manager and I will take care of any region business and hope to visit all of the chapters in the Region, but we will miss working with Leslie.

A reminder, ARMA elections are coming up in January, so remember to vote.  Bonnie Nadler from the Bellevue/Eastside Chapter as well as Doug Allen, Cindy LeMay and Deb Marshall    are running for Association Director while Carol Choksy, Susan McKinney and Helen Streck are candidates for the association’s President-Elect position.  It is important that you vote.  You saw how important one vote could be by our recent gubernatorial race in the State of Washington.

The ARMA International Educational Foundation (AIEF) is still not fully funded so your donations are very important and are tax deductible.  The Foundation funded two research projects this past year.   They are “Discovery, Spoliation, and Legal Holds: Issues Affecting Your RIM Policies” by John Isaza, Esq. and “Access Rights to Business Data on Personal Computers” by John Montana, J.D.

I wish you all a happy holiday and best wishes in the coming year.

Dean Koga, Great Northwest Region Coordinator
